Winter is Coming

Thursday Oct 14, 2021
This week we chat with Helen Rowlands. Helen is a Northwich-based disability rights campaigner. She is currently working with Inclusion London, Disabled People Against Cuts, and grassroots campaign groups across England campaigning for an end to social care charging in England, and the adoption by political parties of social care commitments that reframe ''care'' as the right to independent living, grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Helen's campaigning work as a town councillor on lack of rail network access, and with local residents with aphasia and cognitive and mobility impairment following stroke, led her to the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People, who trained Helen in the social model of disability. Discussions with GMCDP officers about the success of the Greater Manchester Mayor's Disabled People's Panel led Helen to co-found the Cheshire Disabled People's Panel, which launched in 2021.
